Membership Information & How to Join
Discover how membership with The Soil Searchers works, who we welcome, and how we support responsible metal detecting on quality land across Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Hertfordshire.

Why Join Us? The Benefits of Membership

Being part of The Soil Searchers is about far more than simply turning up with a detector. You are joining a warm, well-organised community of like-minded enthusiasts who love history, fresh air, and good company.

  • Quality Land & Great Days Out: Enjoy regular day digs and occasional weekend rallies on carefully arranged permissions across Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire.
  • Room to Roam: We intentionally cap dig numbers to ensure fields are never overcrowded, giving you plenty of ground to search at your own pace and time to catch up with fellow members.
  • Friendly Mentoring & Advice: Whether you're fine-tuning your machine’s settings, perfecting your swing, or trying to identify an intriguing coin or artefact, experienced members are always on hand to help out.
  • Brilliantly Organised Events: We take the stress out of dig days with clear advance notifications, accurate location maps, morning briefings, and dedicated marshals supporting you throughout the day.
  • Detecting Done Right: We take immense pride in our reputation, operating with complete respect for landowners, full adherence to the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting, and proper reporting under the Treasure Act 1996.
  • A Safe, Welcoming Atmosphere: Above all, our club is built on mutual respect and camaraderie. We maintain a strict zero-tolerance approach to bullying, harassment, and unlawful detecting, ensuring every event remains relaxed, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

Joining Us: What You Need to Know

Whether you’re swinging a detector for the very first time or have years of finds under your belt, you’ll find a warm welcome with The Soil Searchers. All we ask is that you share our passion for detecting responsibly, looking after the countryside, and enjoying great days out in good company.

Please Note: Before submitting your application to join, please make sure you take a few moments to read our full Terms and Conditions, as all members agree to follow them when registering.

Membership & Dig Guests
  • Adult Detectorists (18+): All adults detecting at our digs must be full members. To keep things fair and manageable for our community, we do not offer guest passes for adult detectorists.
  • Young Detectorists (Under 18): Adult members are welcome to bring one young detecting guest along. They do not need their own membership, provided you accompany and supervise them at all times.
    • Under 16s: Detect completely free of charge on our standard day digs.
    • Ages 16 & 17: Welcome to detect at the standard dig fee.
  • Non-Detecting Companions: Fancy bringing someone along for the fresh air? Members can generally bring one non-detecting guest to enjoy the day and the walk (subject to individual event capacity). Please keep in mind that companions are not permitted to detect.

Practical Details
  • Locations & Travel: Most of our events take place across Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Hertfordshire, so you'll need to be able to travel out to these regions.
  • Your Kit: You will need your own metal detector, digging tools, and sturdy outdoor clothing and footwear suited to the British weather and terrain. If you’re just getting started and aren't sure what kit to choose, we're always happy to offer guidance.
  • Field Etiquette & Respect: We pride ourselves on being a friendly, respectful group. We expect all members to follow instructions from our marshals and landowners, record finds properly, and leave every field just as neat as—or better than—we found it.
  • Accessibility: Ground conditions and parking setups vary from location to location. If you have any mobility or access requirements, please let us know in advance so we can advise on site suitability.
  • Dogs: Because we visit working farms and estates, dogs are strictly at the landowner’s discretion. Please check the individual Dig Notification before setting off, or contact us directly if you're ever in doubt.

If you have any questions or simply want to check whether the club is the right fit for you, please get in touch—we’re always happy to help.
