How It All Works

The Soil Searchers runs structured day digs and relaxed weekend events on quality land, balancing plenty of room to swing a detector with a sociable club atmosphere.
What to Expect:
  • Prime Locations: Regular digs across Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire.
  • Space to Detect: Capped numbers and generous acreage for every event.
  • Clear Communication: Detailed dig information packs provided beforehand, featuring maps, meeting points, and comprehensive on-site briefings.
  • Community First: A strong focus on responsible detecting and supporting newcomers.

How Our Digs Work

1. Event Announced: We publish dig details in advance, including the county, date, approximate start and finish times, and any special notes.

2. Booking: Members log in to our external booking system to secure their place. Numbers are capped to protect the land and your experience.

3. Information Pack: Confirmed attendees receive a link to a PDF containing maps, the meeting point, parking instructions, and any key rules, shortly after dig registration closes.

4. Final Details: Any last-minute updates (such as weather, field changes, or facilities) are sent via email or SMS, and posted in the members’ channels.

On the Day
Our focus is on a safe, smooth start so you can get detecting quickly and responsibly:
  • Arrive at the meeting point in good time and follow the parking instructions.
  • Sign in with the event organiser and display any required passes.
  • Listen to the on-site briefing covering boundaries, sensitive areas, livestock, and emergency procedures.
  • Finally, enjoy your day detecting, discovering local history, and reporting your finds to help advance our shared understanding of the past.

Digs & Events Overview

Once you have signed up as a website member of The Soil Searchers, you will gain access to our dedicated members' portal. From there, booking your place on our digs and weekenders across our core counties is a breeze. Here is how the process works:
Booking Your Place
  • Register Online: Simply log into the portal and head to 'View Digs' to see any upcoming scheduled events and apply before the closing date. If your plans change, you can easily amend or cancel your entry at any point up until registration closes.
  • Vehicle & Parking Management: To help us ensure there is enough parking for everyone, you will need to specify how you are travelling (bringing your own vehicle, car-sharing, or arriving without a vehicle). You can save and manage your vehicle details directly within the portal.

How Spaces Are Allocated To keep things fair and manage land capacity, we use two booking methods:
  • First Come, First Served: This is our primary method. If a dig is full, you will join a date-ordered reserve list and automatically move up if a spot opens.
  • Random Selection Draw: If we anticipate an event will be heavily oversubscribed, everyone is given a window to apply. At a set date and time, the system will randomly select attendees. Unsuccessful members go onto a reserve list and are drawn at random if a cancellation occurs. You will receive an email with the results either way.
Before & On the Day Shortly after dig registration closes, all confirmed attendees receive an automated email with a link to download our pre-event information PDF (which is also always available in the portal). This contains all the essential details, accurate maps, timings, and any special notes.

When you arrive on the day, just sign in, listen to our clear safety and boundaries briefing, and then head out to explore acres of carefully chosen ground!

What to Expect on the Day

Our digs are friendly, relaxed, and well-structured, whether you are on your first outing or your hundredth.

  • Arrival and Briefing: We start with a short safety and boundaries talk before you head out into the field.
  • Time in the Field: Expect a good stretch of detecting time, taking breaks whenever it suits you.
  • Finds Handling: Significant or unusual finds should always be shown to our marshals or organisers. If you need any assistance recording your discoveries with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, just contact a team member.
  • Support for Newcomers: Our experienced members are happy to help with machine settings, swing technique, and finds identification—just ask.
  • End of the Day: We ensure everyone has safely departed and the land is left in excellent condition.

Event Rules & Safety

On the day, our focus is on a safe and smooth start so you can get detecting quickly and responsibly.
  • Responsible Detecting: All events follow the Code of Practice for Responsible Metal Detecting and comply with the Treasure Act 1996.
  • Respect the Land: Dig neat, plug-style holes, carefully backfill them, and leave no litter. Keep away from crops, hedges, and sensitive features as directed.
  • Headphones: Headphones are mandatory to minimise noise distraction, unless you have a recognised hearing disability.
  • Livestock and Gates: Follow instructions regarding fields with animals, keep noise low around farm buildings, and always leave gates exactly as you found them.
  • Alcohol: You must not be under the influence of alcohol in any way while actively metal detecting.
  • Illegal Substances: The consumption of illegal substances is strictly prohibited.
  • Fitness to Detect: You must be fully capable and fit to detect safely at all times; anyone unable to do so will be asked to leave.
  • Nighthawking: We operate a strict zero-tolerance policy on illegal detecting and will support landowners and the authorities where required.
  • Behaviour and Safeguarding: We expect courteous behaviour at all times, with no bullying, harassment, or discriminatory language.
  • Instructions from Organisers: You must follow all directions given by event staff, especially regarding safety, weather conditions, and early finishes if needed.
  • Terms and Conditions: Please read our full Terms and Conditions.
